Taking PTO should give employees an opportunity to disconnect, recharge, and return ready to do their best work. But for many employees, stepping away isn’t quite that simple.

New research from Wiley Workplace Intelligence explores what they call the “guilt loop”—when employees hesitate to take the time off they’ve earned or struggle to fully disconnect when they do.

The research found that 6 in 10 employees feel guilty about taking PTO, and workload is one of the biggest reasons employees hesitate to step away. For managers, disconnecting can be even more difficult.

What does this mean for leaders?

Creating a workplace where people can truly step away takes more than encouraging employees to use their PTO. Leaders play an important role in setting expectations, managing workloads, building trust, and modeling healthy behaviors themselves.

That’s also where understanding your people can make a difference.

Everything DiSC® gives leaders and teams a common language for understanding different behavioral needs, communication preferences, stressors, and workplace tendencies. With greater awareness, managers can adapt how they communicate and support their people—helping create an environment where employees feel trusted and supported.
